10 Weeks at the Hammer in Haikus

AUGUST 13, 2014 – BY JESSICA BELLAMY, COMMUNICATIONS AND PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT INTERN

Jessica Bellamy came to the Hammer this summer as part of the Getty Foundation'sMulticultural Undergraduate Internship program and worked with both the communications and public engagement departments for the past 10 weeks.

She sums up her experience in haiku (naturally).

1

Boom. Opening Night.
The best kept secret of art?
More handsome people.

2

Fourteen days straight? Whoops.
Jan asked if I'd been drinking
the Hammer Kool-Aid.

“Perhaps if I stick around long enough they will bring more breadsticks out.” I thought silently for the next ten weeks.

3

Eating my lunch s l o w.
Entire workforce of Westwood
in Annex screams goal!

During the first Saturday World Cup match, I was so engrossed in soccer, tacos,
and looking natural for staged photos that I did not notice John Baldessari sitting next to me at AMMO
until I was uploading the photos on the Hammer's Flickr the next week.

First Getty field trip
Saw De Kooning’s Pink Angels
Must. Sneak. A. Photo.

Wonderful front yard sculptures at the Weisman Foundation. Unfortunately no photos of the collection were allowed once inside the home, and I learned that I am not very sneaky...

5

I count: my dinos,
4. The babies in headphones,
2. And days ‘till next

6

Public engagement
as complex as Adorno
this research is cray.

Yay for actual physical books!

7

I curate dinos
observing my cohort sway
with the courtyard beat.

“This work deals with themes of exclusion.”

8

Blog about Snapchat,
Summarize the Gold Stage,
avoid Sunset Blvd.

Hey look, Made in L.A. banners!

9

Well now I've been spoiled,
with mindful meditations
and Lunchtime Art Talks.

The Hammer made it possible for me to achieve my life-long goal of being a hand model.
I want to thank everyone on the communications team for choosing these hands for the photo on the HAMMER PLUS page. I am truly humbled. I won’t forget you.

Denial: not just
a river in Egypt. What?!
Where did ten weeks go?
